Portions of the river also form parts of the Austrian-Slovenian, Slovenia-Croatian, and Croatian-Hungarian borders.\nThe source of the river is in the Hohe Tauern national park in Austria. The source is 1,898 m above sea level.\nIn Austria several hydroelectric dams have been constructed for the production of renewable energy.\nIn Slovenia it passes Gornja Radgona, Radenci, and Ver\u017eej.\nThe river gives its name to the Slovenian region of Prekmurje (literally 'across the Mur') and the Croatian region of Me\u0111imurje (literally 'between the Mur').
